Tell us what they were like before they developed a substance use disorder*

My Derek was a healthy happy 18 yr old he worked 2 jobs, loved going on outings with his best friend, (Dad), loved football, motor cross, Sprint car races. He was always smiling and giving hugs. He would not allow anyone to be down, he would bring them up with his beautiful smile and sparkling blue eyes. I adored everything about my baby. He is my youngest of four, my baby.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

My son's addiction started after becoming addicted to pain meds that were prescribed after he broke his foot. His a addiction was short lived, after he was given heroin that was fentanyl laced. My son died in my home. I failed saving him.

What made them smile?

Everything, he loved life. He loved watching reruns of 7th heaven, full house and other good wholesome shows.

What do you miss the most about them today?

His smile, hugs and hearing I love you Mom. Well everything, I miss everything about Derek.

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

That I am so sorry that I failed you, as a Mom and at saving you that night. I am so sorry.
