Tell us what they were like before they developed a substance use disorder*
Aaron had recently come out as transgender. He was taking testosterone and finally living life as his true self. He loved helping others and making them smile. He truly loved life and he loved his friends and family.
Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder
He started using heroin at 15 to impress a girl. He had been to 6 rehabs and 3 sober living houses. Sadly he was found dead in the last house after 7 hours. He fought hard but because he started so young I think the odds were against him.
What made them smile?
Hanging out with his friends and family. He loved law and order SVU and reading. He also really loved food which always made me smile.
What do you miss the most about them today?
What don't I miss? His laugh, his smile, his hugs. I could go on forever. I guess the thing I miss the most are his goodnight texts "goodnight and sleep well. I'll talk to you tomorrow. I love you so much". What I wouldn't give to just get one more.
If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?
I'm proud of how hard you fought. You were never a disappointment. I will love and miss you until my final breath.
