Corey struggled with heroin addiction. It turned him into a person he didn’t want to be. Corey did 3 separate rounds of rehab. The last being the most promising. Unfortunately he lost the battle after 7 months clean.

What made them smile?

Being with his family.

What do you miss the most about them today?

I miss him more than words can say but I also miss what he is missing out on with his kids. Every milestone is marked with happiness and sadness because he is not there.

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

I love you, I miss you, and I forgive you.

Brian was always there for the underdog. He was so loved by all of us.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

We tried, we really did – I keep wondering what we could have done different or what we should have done. Counselors, doctors, many rehabs, jail, enabling, tough love, living homeless, living with us…we tried it all. Brian was delusional, paranoid, bipolar…drugs did this to him. In and out of rehab, in and out of jail…I hid what I could – I didn't want people to think we raised him this way – we didn't. We can only hope that now Brian can see how much he was loved and how we tried our hardest to help him. Drugs changed his life and ours forever. I hate drugs! I hate what it does to the addict, I hate what it does to the family. Drugs can only cause heartache. Brian lost so many friends..from overdoses and from the way the drugs made him act. He wasn't Brian anymore – his life wasn't his own.Stealing, lying, living life with only one thing in mind. I had hoped he could beat the horrible demons that took over his life – at least now he is at peace..no more delusions finally at peace...

Just him...before drugs

I’m sorry I didn’t know how to help you. You know I’ve always loved you.

His texts every morning to say good morning love you mom and every night to say good night love you mom his voice him coming through that door and saying what you got to eat mom I'm hungry his beautiful smile laugh he had a funny laugh

Casey was ALWAYS fun loving and very outgoing with a sense of humor and a personality that was bigger than life. He was always kind and nonjudmental and was a friend to everyone.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

Casey was pretty much in denial about having a problem at all.I believe in his own mind, whether he admitted it or not, he knew that he did.He reached out to me about 3 months before he died wanting to change his life around. He was definitely clean and traveling and working every day doing industrial construction with his step dad and was doing really well. He had saved several thousand dollars in about 3 months and had planned to keep traveling and learning the power industry. He decided to take a break between jobs for a few weeks and went back to SC after working in Georgia for the previous 3 months, and was looking forward to going to work on a project in Texas that was scheduled in the near future. To make a long story short, the day he arrived back in SC,he met up with a person who he was connected with before he decided to change his life around and he actually overdosed and died that very same day that he arrived back home in SC. Casey is missed and loved

What made them smile?

Casey loved seeing other people happy. He truly did. He was a joker and that helped him make a lot of friends through school .He was the type that if you had an argument, and even if it was YOUR fault, he would always be the one to come up and say,"I love you. '

What do you miss the most about them today?

That sweet demeanor and his sweet messages to me. I miss getting to see the man that he was developing into when he settled down for the 3 months before he died. He was starting to evolve into a mature young man. I miss his loving heart and sweet soul.

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

I love you and I hope that I never let you go a day in your life that you didn't know that. Even in your darkest times,the joy that you brought to me outweighs anything else above and beyond.

Nicky was a beautiful person inside and out. He had a smile that would light up the room when he entered. He would help everyone he loved family gathering .He loved to hang out with his friends. And he worked for every thing he wanted. And he loved his family very much.

Nicky struggle alot with this disorder how and where he would get money to buy his pills. He couldnt pay his bills that lead to evictions. Plus so much more.

What made them smile?

Everything and any thing made Nicky smile. Family holidays with his cousin telling jokes. And the day his son Richie was born. Nicky was always smiling then

What do you miss the most about them today?

I miss his smile, being able just to speak to him. To his hear his laugh I miss everything about my son.

I would tell how how much I love him. And I am so very proud of him. If I could have switch places with him I would.

Bubbly, happy! I always said in every picture my daughter was in she had a big smile on her face.

She went through detox numerous times at Talbot Hall , she also had a very long stint in a recovery center in Wellston Ohio called The Georgia Harris House, her coping skills, anxiety and depression always led her back to addiction to cover her pains. She was also diagnosed with mental illness which Led her back to addiction. She fought addiction hard as she wanted to live and had so much to live for including 2 children.

What made them smile?

Her family, her children especially! Her sense of good worth, she was a functioning addict and was doing so many good things in life that made her happy including working on a welding degree in school, securing her first apartment and car all on her own! Her friends from all walks of life, recovery, school and the military! She served in our United States Army as military police!

What do you miss the most about them today?

Her smile, our talks, our hugs. Her not being able to watch her children Alainia and Liam growing up!

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

I truly wish I could tell her how much I love her! I was her rock through all of the addiction, in death so many of her friends have come to me to tell me how much she truly loved and cared for me!

Mark was so funny and incredibly smart. He had a huge heart and loved his friends and family.

Mark was addicted for 8 years. Mark dabbled with almost everything and quit before starting the next drug of choice. When he started Heroin it didn't take him long to realize he couldn't "just" quit. He went to many rehabs and did many stints in jail because of illegal activity to get drugs. He made me mad and so sad because I as his mother saw his pain and couldn't make it better

What made them smile?

When others laughed, when he and his poppies would talk. When I smiled my baby smiled. Playing basketball with his friends.

What do you miss the most about them today?

Our talks and his amazing hugs!

Zach was someone special that left an impression on everybody who met him. If it wasn't those green eyes and long eye lashes then it was his personality and sense of humor that drew people to him. He was always the life of the party and made everyone around him laugh. He loved unconditionally and he considered his closest friends to be like brothers and sisters. He was uncle Zach to not just his nieces and nephews but to his friends kids as well. Zach was a proud brother, who loved and cared about us more than we deserved. He stood up to anybody to defend and protect his sisters. He was kind, caring, smart, handsome, and ridiculously funny.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

can remember the exact moment that things got bad for Zach and addiction would take over his life. He was fifteen years old, I was seventeen. I had an infant son and was getting up in the middle of the night to make his bottle when I walked past Zach's room and could see the silhouette of him sitting in the dark on his bedroom floor, crying, listening to music. He had just gotten home from the hospital where he and his then girlfriend would go with the advice of the physicians to remove their 45 day old son who was born prematurely off life support. Life for Zach after that moment was pure chaos. He would use any drug he could get his hands onto and push his limits to face many overdose scares.

What made them smile?

I love you so much. Please stop, dont do this. I need you so bad.

Sadly, I've never known my brother before his substance abuse.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

Greg’s addiction to meth began before I was even born. He spent a majority of his adult life in prison because of it. It also caused the relationship with his two children to become estranged and ultimately take his life when he unknowlying snorted fentanyl laced meth. Greg was born to teenage parents; his dad would spend most of his life in prison and our mom would abuse and neglect him. He would grow up calling his step dad, my father, dad. My dad would proudly call him his son and was so happy to let Greg move in with him this last year to help care for him, and he was pleased to do it. Our brother Zach had died 22 days prior of an overdose and Greg was so devastated by it he didnt even attend the funeral. He stayed home and got high instead.

What made them smile?

Family.

What do you miss the most about them today?

His voice.

Your not alone. We all love you so much and we can all get through this together.

My son, Paul, went through school in special education. He didn't have a lot of confidence and was reticent in a group situation. He was characterized by others as sweet-natured and kind and was close to his family and a few friends. Among his disabilities were a language impairment and a hand tremor, with the former slowing his processing time and the latter precluding adequate control of a pencil, both of which made school an ongoing struggle. As a teenager, on his own, he started to write poetry, most of which he didn't share with others. I believe it was his outlet for self expression. Over the years this interest grew and, thanks to his use of a laptop, his writing was legible enough to enable his creativity and his insight to shine. He was also musical -- played the guitar -- and had a wonderful sense of humor. His capacity to think exceeded the school programs he experienced and, after finishing high school at the age of 20, he was ill-prepared for suitable employment.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

Paul turned to drugs in his early 20s. I believe he found they provided relief from his self doubt and his worry about future opportunities. It didn't take long for addiction to set in, and he experienced multiple programs, most of which were not appropriate for him and, in some cases, were downright destructive. He was incarcerated twice, making his already dismal employment opportunities nearly out of reach. He did have stretches of avoiding drug use, the longest of which was toward the end of his life when he had a job he loved and was able to get his first apartment, both aspects of his life that made him proud. He relapsed and failed to find the help he sought, first a program and, when that fell through, he and I tired to get Suboxone to no avail. While still midst of this quest, he died alone in his apartment.

What made them smile?

It was so easy to make him laugh. He smiled at a lot of things: triumphs of others, animals, children, a new pair of jeans, a compliment, or a plan with a friend. He had grown enough to laugh at himself which he did in good humor. His job was a source of joy which included camaraderie he'd not always had. He also loved music and derived much pleasure from it. Lastly, there was his poetry -- something he knew he was good at.

What do you miss the most about them today?

I miss talking to him, hearing his ideas, or his stories about experiences he'd had. His apartment was just a few blocks from me and we did a lot together to fix it up. Sometimes he'd come over just to watch TV with me, often bringing ice cream to shore-up the chances of me going along.

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

I admired you tremendously and in many ways believe your resilience reenforces mine.

Dillon was very into sports! He played all sports throughout school.He especially loved his football team, the Raiders. Family was the most important thing to Dillon though, he loved being with his family!

Dillon’s step brother took his own life and he could not find a way to deal with his emotions. This struggle led him to numb his feelings with drugs.

Fun, popular, such a great son very athletic happy go lucky.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

He didn't think he had a problem. He was in and out of hospitals for over dosing. He loved his dope but toward the end of his life I think he was tired of that life and admitted he had a problem. He worked but he struggled getting up everyday to get there and it was wearing him out.

What made them smile?

Being with friends and family. Sadly his drugs made him smile too.

What do you miss the most about them today?

I miss his smile and laugh and his presence. He started being more like his old self toward the end of his life.

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

How much I miss you and look forward to seeing you in heaven.

Curt sang in a band, always loved painting, collecting superhero items and comic books, was a “ foodie” ... was passionate about his favorite foods, his family and his dog. He was witty, friendly, loving.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

Curt was employed in a place where illegal drugs were readily available. He and some friends got interested and soon were unable to break free. On many occasions during a ten year struggle, he would make the decision to be clean and sober. He would suffer thru violent bouts of pain, trembling, vomiting... he would end up homeless, sold off his personal possessions in order to support his habit. He would come home to us for a good meal... some cigarettes... dog food...but was never given cash. He had the love of a woman, but the love of his life left when his habit began. When he decided for the last time that he had had enough, he began eating and drinking beer. This went on for 6 months. He gained 60 lbs. Then one day when he was angry with me , he had sprained his ankle. I was only getting information second hand, since he would not answer my texts. He went seeking drugs that one last time. He was found lifeless on the floor of his girlfriend’s garage.

What made them smile?

His dog, his family, being able to be the life of the party, snd his own jokes!

What do you miss the most about them today?

There is not enough room for me to write all that i miss about my boy. His voice, his smile, his caring hugs, his wit, his knowledge of things I had no idea he even cared about! And the list goes on..

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

I need him to know how much his life mattered and how badly our hearts are hurting since he left us. He left this world angry with me , and I must deal with this guilt on top of the horrendous grief!

Kyle was would light up a room when he walked in. He never met a stranger. Full of life. Always wanted everyone to be happy. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and father. Being a father was what he lived for. He loved his daughter more that anything in the world.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

I think Kyle’s troubles started when his grand mother came to live with us. She had Dementia. Kyle’s father was diagnosed with severe COPD around the same time. When I think back he was struggling with depression. Over time drugs and alcohol I think was his way of escaping. He was real good at hiding what he was doing.

What made them smile?

His baby girl. Seeing her was the best thing in his life.

What do you miss the most about them today?

His smile and laughter.

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

I forgive you and I love you.

My sister started with drinking then it went to pill use then heroin. She went to rehab twice and jail multiple times before she lost her battle.

everything! Mostly her smile, calling her to chat or gossip. I miss her every single day!

TYLER WAS AN AWESOME KID WITH A HUGE HEART, HE LOVED SCHOOL AND SPORTS AND NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT ANYTHING. HE WAS A LISTENER FOR ANYONE AND NEVE JUDGED.

STARTED OUT WITH ALCOHOL IN HIGH SCHOOL, THEN STARTED TAKING BENZO'S AND OPIATES. SOMEONE AT HIS JOB INTRODUCED HIM TO HERION. HE HAD BEEN CLEAN A YEAR AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH. WAS WORKING 60 HOURS A WEEK AND ATTENDING 3 MEETINGS PER WEEK.

What made them smile?

What do you miss the most about them today?

TYLER WAS NOT ONLY MY SON BUT MY BEST FRIEND. WE WERE ESPECIALLY CLOSE AND ALWAYS DONE THINGS TOGETHER.

Craigsville,Wv Lived there his whole life. JON was such a happy creative child. He loved music it was his passion, he wrote songs, sang and played in a band. He loved his little Brother they got along well. Jon succeeded at anything he tried, he was advanced for his age. He was a beautiful person with the biggest gorgeous smile.

Tell us about their struggles with substance use disorder

Jon started abusing opiates at age 15 he started out with Marijuana and drinking he biological dad sadly contributed to his addiction, he said he was sad and never got in trouble and thought if he done something bad it would get his dad's attention and he would love him, he said his dad never would tell him he loved him or give him a hug and he wanted what other dads gave their sons. But he was hooked and it was too late he went to rehab two months only to get out on his 18th bday and his dad bought him alcohol and it started all over again.

What made them smile?

Music made Jon smile, when Jon and me (mom) would go for drives and walk together we would laugh and have such a great time. Jon loved animals they gave him comfort, and he always smiled when I gave him hugs and told him how much I loved him and how proud I was of him. He was an excellent sportsmen and skateboarder, played about any instrument and playing his acoustic guitar gave him peace and made him smile, he would always sing and look up to the heavens.

What do you miss the most about them today?

I miss everything about him, I miss hearing him come through the door and saying mom will you cook me some food, I miss his calls and late night texts just to say I love you mom or I love yah'more. I miss hearing him sing I miss hearing his guitar playing, I miss hearing him playing Xbox live and yelling at the game l0l, I miss him and his brother being together and hanging out, his little brother looked up to him and took it hard when he passed, mostly I miss his bear hugs he would give me and the kiss on the cheek. He was a good kid with a beautiful soul he is missed so so much.

If you had a chance to say one more thing to today what would it be?

I would tell him how much he was loved and their is more out there than having to depend on substances. I would have begged him to stay home and not left that day. But mostly how much I love him and I was proud of him.
