Heroin Memorial - 2015/10/15 - Jared Justice - Age 26 yrs - Dry Ridge, Kentucky

2015/10/15 - Jared Justice - Age 26 yrs - Dry Ridge, Kentucky

Submitted by: Rebecca Alsip - Sibling

Name: Jared Justice
State:  Kentucky, 41035

Date of Passing: 10/15/2015
Date of Birth: 07/27/1989
Age: 26

Tell Us About Them:

Jared was a son, brother, and uncle who would be there for you no matter what. During his active addiction he was a totally different person. He was the most cockiest person I had ever met. He loved learning about trees and had an extensive knowledge about them. He hated school and authority. Loved to be out doors all of the time.

Tell Us About Their Struggles With Addiction:

We have a lot of presumptions but we really don't know when he really started to experiment with drugs. He tried alcohol before he was 21 and got into trouble with that. After the first time of being in trouble with the law it just went down hill from there. He was very good at hiding his addiction. It wasn't until he was caught that we realized the extent of the situation. He had struggled for about 6 years with addiction. In and out of jail, being sober in jail, then getting out and going right back to drugs and hanging around the wrong crowd. We had hoped that a year and a half of jail time would have made him realize that sober was the way to be, but 30 days out of jail he was right back where he left off.

What Made Them Smile?

He loved goofing off and picking on people.

What Do You Miss the Most About Them?

I miss everything about him. Even though he got on my last nerve I still miss not having him here with us physically. Not being able to grow old with him and knowing it's just me now is what hurts the most.

If You Had a Chance to Say One More Thing to Your Angel What Would It Be?

I would tell him that I loved him. We never really expressed out feelings for each other or in our immediate family. We all just sorta knew that we all loved each other in the actions that we took everyday. That we all needed him even if he thought that we didn't. I would express my feelings more openly with him and tell him the honest truth with no filters. Hoping that he would realize his actions was hurting everyone around him.

Submitted by: Stacy Emminger - Parent

Name: Anthony Perez
State:  Pennsylvania, 17552

Date of Passing: 03/01/14
Date of Birth: 04/27/90
Age: 23

Tell Us About Them:

Anthony loved to go fishing. He loved to cook and was a master in the kitchen. He worked in lots of restaurants. He came up with some delicious dishes. He liked cars and liked to work on motors. He was a daredevil on bikes and four wheelers.

Tell Us About Their Struggles With Addiction:

Anthony started drinking and smoking pot when he was about 13. He graduated to coke and crack by the time he was 16. He tried anything he was given, really. We took him to rehab at 16, but he ran away within a few hours and we had to pick him up. He continued to drink and mix substances. I don't think he had a day without something in him for years. He did a few 30-day jail terms. He started using heroin when he was 22 and was dead right before he turned 24.

What Made Them Smile?

Our pets. His son.

What Do You Miss the Most About Them?

He told me he loved me every day. Even when he was a teenager. I remember all the moms were jealous that even when he was in high school he still hugged me and told me he loved me. I'd give anything to hear him say, "I love you, Mom." just one more time.

If You Had a Chance to Say One More Thing to Your Angel What Would It Be?

I love you, Anthony. I'm glad you're out of pain now.

Heroin Memorial - 2015/08/31 - Dennis LongElk - Age 25 yrs - Welch, Minnesota

DennisLongElk1

2015/08/31 - Dennis LongElk - Age 25 yrs - Welch, Minnesota

Submitted by: Tammy Wells Garcia - Parent

Name: Dennis LongElk
State:  Minnesota, 55089

Date of Passing: 8•31•15
Date of Birth: 5•8•90
Age: 25

Tell Us About Them:

Dennis was the youngest of my 2 children. He was a father of 3children who miss him a whole bunch. Dennis trusted and found to befriend people of all walks of life. He had a heart of gold and a smile worth a thousand words. He had a great sense of humor and always had people laughing no matter what the situation was. He was smart and knew his way around getting what he wanted. He will always be my baby boy, regardless.

Tell Us About Their Struggles With Addiction:

My son struggled with addiction at an early age. The older he got, the worse his drug habit consumed his life. Anxiety and depression played a major role into his using. He sought out using daily just to feel normal. The sad part was, he only thought of himself and no one else during these times, but I knew he wanted to quit and tried many times to become sober, but to no avail. He was his worst enemy, he knew it. He loved Us and his children but loved that feeling of numbness more. The worries stopped once he started self medicating. It was a daily routine, a routine in which one becomes accustomed to the situation at head. The withdrawal for him, like many others, wasn't pretty. He didn't OD on heroin, but did dabble with it. His DOC was Xanax and Methodone, that's what was in his system at the TOD, the struggle is real...

What Made Them Smile?

His family, he was proud of his children and seeing them happy is what made him smile. A home cooked meal always put a smile on his face too, me loved my cooking. Knowing we cared and loved him, regardless of the drug Use, made him smile. Knowing he could count on me, made him smile. Simple things in life, made him smile. The drugs use to mask his smile, the faces of addiction covered up his smiles...

What Do You Miss the Most About Them?

What do I miss most ?!! Hmmmm, I miss him, him before the drugs took over his heart, mind, body & soul. I miss the little boy I carried for 9 months of my life, I miss the little boy that I raised into a young man, only to be taken away from me. I thought we could conquer these demons, but in the end, they won.

If You Had a Chance to Say One More Thing to Your Angel What Would It Be?

Simple---> I love you !

Heroin Memorial - 2014/10/24 - Chloe Shellady - Age 17 yrs - Chicago, Illinois

2014/10/24 - Chloe Shellady - Age 17 yrs - Chicago, Illinois

Submitted by: Lizy Shellady - Parent

Name: Chloe Shellady
State:  Illinois, 60611

Date of Passing: October 24, 2014
Date of Birth: August 6, 1997
Age: 17

Tell Us About Them:

How do you sum up a life? Chloë brought laughter to the world and made sure we didn't take ourselves too seriously. She had an open minded perspective, wonderful creativity and fierce independence. She was a beautiful, sensitive soul, trying to find her way in the world.

Tell Us About Their Struggles With Addiction:

Chloë's struggle probably began in the 8th grade and continued until her passing her senior year of high school. In the beginning she was just smoking marijuana, and when they say that it is a gateway drug...it most certainly was in her case. Chloë was in and out of various rehabs, hospitals and wilderness programs. Her family did everything to help her fight her overwhelming personal struggle against drugs. There was part of her that really wanted sobriety. But at the same time, she believed she could handle the drugs. Yet she was no match for the horrendous power of heroin. From the time she started smoking heroin (she didn't inject) until her death, was a mere 15 months.

What Made Them Smile?

Chloë loved music and had a beautiful singing voice, loved to write raps. She was happy behind a camera or writing stories and poems. Her dog, Bo, would always bring a smile to her face. She loved the beach and hanging out with her friends. She was an avid theatre buff and snow skier. Having been born overseas, she definitely had the travel bug. Chloë manage to fit a lot into a short life:)

What Do You Miss the Most About Them?

I miss Chloë making me laugh, or saying, "oh, Mom" when I would get too serious. I miss being able to hear her beautiful voice at concerts. I miss giving her a hug and telling her she's beautiful.

If You Had a Chance to Say One More Thing to Your Angel What Would It Be?

I am sorry that this life was so difficult for you and that the horrible drugs took my precious girl too early. I am sorry you had to die alone, but I know you are safe and so much better now. And I will tell you all about it when I see you again.

Heroin Memorial - 2015/05/08 - Erin Leventhal - Age 19 yrs - Malden, Massachusetts

2015/05/08 - Erin Leventhal - Age 19 yrs - Malden, Massachusetts

Submitted by: Deanne Leventhal - Sibling

Name: Erin Leventhal
State:  Massachusetts, 02148

Date of Passing: 5/8/15
Date of Birth: 2/27/96
Age: 19

Tell Us About Them:

My sister was a beautiful person, inside and out. She was always so full of energy, fun, and laughter. Her greatest joy was being an aunt to her two nieces. She was one of the most caring, compassionate people I’ve ever met. Many of her friends said that she would give the shirt off her back to anyone. She was a vegetarian and the ultimate animal lover.

Tell Us About Their Struggles With Addiction:

Erin’s struggle with addiction began when she was just 15 years old. She ran away from a DCF program and started dating her friend’s brother who was in his mid-twenties. He was addicted to heroin and she was in love with him. I believe he intentionally got her addicted so she would supply him with money for heroin. When we finally found her, we called the police and they were both arrested. She remained in a program for 3 years, until she was 18.

The day after her 18th birthday, she went back with him and immediately started doing heroin again. He had her open multiple bank accounts for check fraud scams and she was in thousands of dollars of debt within a few months. When all of her accounts were closed, they could no longer afford motels, so they resorted to the streets of Boston. He was constantly in and out of jail, and she was constantly in and out of detoxes. She went to jail for several months after getting caught shoplifting numerous times. They unexpectedly let her out on probation, despite my family begging them not to. The day she got out, she went to our sister’s house and they waited for me to pick them up for an NA meeting and before I got there, she overdosed and passed away.

I truly believe she didn’t want to be an addict. I know fear played a major part in why she didn’t seek recovery. I begged her to go to Florida for treatment, but she was too scared to leave everything she every knew behind. I know she was definitely hopeless- she was thousands of dollars in debt, had numerous court cases, and didn’t even have a GED- she had a long way to go to achieve success. I think the biggest obstacle that stood in her way of recovery was her endless supply of heroin money. She was homeless, but she didn’t mind because she was always high. At first she had a check scam, and then she had a shoplifting scam. She never had to be without heroin to really, really want recovery.

What Made Them Smile?

She was always smiling and laughing.

What Do You Miss the Most About Them?

I miss everything about her, especially her hilarious jokes.

If You Had a Chance to Say One More Thing to Your Angel What Would It Be?

I will always love you, no matter what.

If You Had a Chance to Say One More Thing to Your Angel What Would It Be?

I had never dealt with addiction in my life. I had no idea how to handle loving someone with an addiction. I'm sorry if I hurt you in any way, which I know I did. If I could do things over with the knowledge that I have now I would. Your son is amazing and not a day goes by where we aren't sharing memories of you.

Tyler went through 30 days and came out feeling good, started a new job this lasted 3 months the very first time he used again I found him dead a few hours later.

I love him with all my heart, I miss him and I am sorry he was in so much pain that he turned to drugs, I wish he would have come to me one more time before using like he did when I put him in rehab the first time and that he is not a failure in my eyes.

She was in and out of the court system, was locked up for 7 months and lived 37 hours after her release.
